Story of the Cyborg Ninja:

Gray Fox was one of the top soldiers for a covert ops group named FOX HOUND.
Having abandoned the outfit he joined with Big Boss in creating Outer Heaven in Zanzibar.
A close friend and ex-comerade Solid Snake infiltrated Outer Heaven in order to take down a secret nuclear weapon code named Metal Gear.
Finally, Snake and Fox came face to face in the midst of a mine field. A fist-to-fist duel involving no hatred or murderous intent...and during that wierd moment of purity, the two were bound by forces transcending words and emotion.

Snake emerged victorious leaving a nearly dead Gray Fox in order to take down Metal Gear.

Fox was thought to be dead, in fact, he should have been...but he wasn't.
The military needed a a guinea pig for their gene therapy experiments...apparently for their
test subject, they decided to use the body of a soldier who was recovered after the fall of Zanzibar.
The man was on the verge of death..but they revived him.
They fitted him with a prototype exoskeleton and kept him drugged for 4 years while they experimented on him like a plaything.

They used him to test all sorts of gene therapy techniques.
The record says that he died in an explosion in the laboratory...
but he escaped, and wreakd havoc on all those in the lab, causing the explosion and taking the lives of everyone there.
Now, Gray Fox..the Cyborg Ninja...wanders the land searching for death but never finding it.

(the majority of this is paraphrased from a codec transmission in Metal Gear Solid explaining the origins of the Ninja)
